Stanley's tan leather fold-over "The Revised and Improved Collector's Tax Book....Adapted to the Revised Statutes of 1883", by W. W. Bolster, Published Portland: W. H. Stevens & Company, No. 193 Middle Street. Entries from 1890-1892 with categories for real estate, personal property, poll tax, highway tax, a section on school district tax. With three loose handwritten pages inserted. One is list of children for Hannah Lopaus(?) who moved to Mount Desert July 12th 1799 and had 10 children and includes list of 9 children born to Hannah's daughter Nancy Lopauss Richardson Clark, one of whom was Meltiah P. Richardson (spouse of Carrie Stanley Richardson). The second loose page is a petition for a fish weir at Thrumcap for Enoch B. Stanley and W.D.(?) Stanley in January 1891. | This group of five ledger sheets tally Charles E. Bunker’s debits and credits for voyage on Schooner “Como” with cargo "cocoanuts, mahogany, and cedars in account with Odio & Perozo of New York". Loose ledger pages are dated February 6-21, 1879. There are 34,505 cocoanuts; 4 logs mahogany; 4 logs cedar; and 8 logs cedar. No ports or destinations discernible. Documents are signed in New York. (Only Page A transcribed.) The Schooner Como was built in Cherryfield 1873; No.125172; 133 tons. Charles E Bunker was master 1877. These ledgers are part of collection of Clara Rice items (Clara Adeline Richardson Bunker Rice (1847-1923). (Charles Bunker was Clara's second husband of three. Clara Rice was postmistress on Sutton Island in the Cranberry Isles. She may have married a Fernald, then Charles Edward Bunker, and then wed Wilbert Augustus Rice in 1893. ) |

One folder of Box 8 pertaining to GCI houses has been scanned and saved as jpg and pdf. Box 19 folder 8 has information on 28 Sutton Island houses 1806-1906. Each box has a list of folders and contents. Families mentioned in this collection include: Bunker, Spurling, Hadlock, Stanley, Standley, Gilley, Bulger, Guptill, Hamor, Richardson, and Workman. A xerox copy of a collection of materials gathered in memoriam related to the military career of Lieutenant Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General Andrew Barclay Spurling who served during the Civil War and died August 22, 1906. [Spurling is the son of Abigail Cobb Hadlock Spurling who was widowed and married William P. Preble. Spurling's boyhood home was the Preble House on Great Cranberry Island, Maine. He was born in the house across the street from the Preble house now known as the Freeman house.] Spurling was in the 2nd Maine Cavalry Union Army and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor March 3, 1863. This packet of materials was given to GCIHS by Hugh Dwelley in 2004 and contains copies of documents outlined in a letter to "Cara and Ted" (probably Ted Spurling, Sr. of Islesford, Little Cranberry Island, ME) from "Marianne and Rene" dtd June 1st (no year). Marianne and Rene had requested the Spurling records and received them for the cost of $32.00. Documents explain Andrew Spurling's heroism and exploits, contain copies of military records, and include statements by other Mainers who served with him. There are also three typewritten pages of text written by Ted Spurling Sr., Islesford, Maine, summing up Andrew Spurling's life, including Ted Spurling's handwritten note: "Gen. Andrew Spurling's father was Samuel Spurling. Andrew's mother was Abigail Hadlock (of Little Cranberry Island.) Gen. Andrew was a first cousin to my great grandfather, George N. Spurling and also a first cousin to my Great Grand Father, Gilbert T. Hadlock - Ted Spurling Sr. 7/8/2002. *Benjamin Spurling was a Rev. War veteran as well. Ted" The last few pages include copies of newspaper articles: one describes the the discovery of 1864 graffiti etched into the wall of a home in Bagdad, Florida, where Spurling and his troops apparently stopped. Graffitti has been preserved in-situ by the homeowner. Another article tells about the end of his life in Chicago investing in real estate and a rawhide manufacturing company, and mentions his unfortunate investment in the Spurling Block in Elgin just at the Panic of 1893. The last page is a letter from "Bud" to Ted [Spurling] thanking him for his copy and inserting his thoughts, dated September 9, 1994. [Perhaps the original copies of these documents are in the Sawtelle collection at Acadia NPS or in the Islesford Historical Society? TBD] |

Transcribed. Also included is a 2019 letter from an Eliot family descendant, Alexander Goriansky, with with Eliot family genealogy and a copy of a letter published in "Letters from Elizabeth Cabot, Vol. III, Boston 1905". The letter is about Mrs. Cabot's visit to GCI August 8, 1900 to view the new stained glass window in the church: "...It is one of Mrs. Whitman's beautiful wreathes, with gorgeus reds and blues and enough white to show them off, laid on a white Greek cross, on the arms of which is the inscription. The church is absolutely bare, but well colored as to the walls...." Goriansky states that 100 years later, he lived upstairs from where the window's creator, Sarah Wyman Whitman, had lived from 1880-1904 (#77 Mt. Vernon Street, Boston), and that she was very fine designer and maker of "stained" glass windows. |

| Memorabilia. Polly Bunker Day August 14, 2016, celebration at GCIHS. Photos, invitation, program, hat. Co-Chairs Wini Smart and Leslie Watson, with support from the Cranberry Club. Among myriad other contributions to the island, Polly (Pauline) ran the Whale's Rib gift shop for 46 years, and she worked at the Asticou Inn on MDI, too. Large 8x10 color photos and small snapshots of photos of Polly and Tud Bunker from bygone times donated by Wini and Leslie: Polly with friends and family including Ada, Charlene Allen, Leslie Watson, Tom Watson, John Delaney, Susan White, Anne Watson, Morrie Newell, Johnna Newell, Ruth Westpha, Marilynne Fredrickson, Karin Whitney, Marianne Avery, Carl Nelson, and a special one of Polly with her sisters, Charlene, Leona, and Ada taken about 2000. A DVD of photos from Wini Smart was played at the celebration. (There are also scanned family photos that were displayed at the party.) |

Hay & Son druggist 1892 for various concoctions with prices and paid by Fernald. (Scanned both sides1/2/17) 3. Booklet. Graduation 1903 of Frances Marion Spurling (Louise Marr's mother) among others. 4. Copy of article re: the vessel “Georgie”. 5. Newspaper clippings: Two poems by E.T. Preble. 6. Four pages of handwritten genealogy and misc notes for Preble/Marr/Spurlings. Annotation says "Preble was my Great Grandfather" Page one also explains the [Preble] house history:"The old "house" lot was Samuel Spurlings and sold to him by Benjamin Spurling (not grampy) in Sept 4, 1832. This was Preble's wife's (Abigail Hadlock) first husband. He died and she marries William Preble. The house was built by Samuel Spurling. She has four children by Sam Spurling before he dies. Preble helps bring them up…." 7. Newspaper obituary for "Wm. P. Preble Former Portland Is Citizen Dead" with pencil corrections indicating it should be Wm. H. Preble, and indicates "Chicago". 8.
